Switch from Canny
Export your feedback from Canny, then import the file in FigVote: your posts keep their status, vote count, tags and original date. You see what will be imported before anything is written. Importing the same posts again (the same file, or the CSV and later the JSON) adds what is missing and never creates a post twice.
1. Export from Canny (CSV)
Canny describes the export in its help center: Exporting feedback. In short:
- A whole board: Settings, then Boards, then Export Data.
- A filtered list: filter the Feedback page, then click the download button.
- In Canny's newer Ideas view: right-click the view in the left sidebar, then Export view (up to 10,000 records).
The CSV holds each post's title, details, status, score (total votes), comment count, creation date, URL, tags, category, author, owner and image links. It does not hold the text of comments or who voted.
Or: export with Canny's API (JSON, with comments)
If you want comments too, download your posts and comments as JSON with your own Canny API key, from the Canny API: the posts/list endpoint, and comments/list for comments. Put both in one file as { "posts": [...], "comments": [...] }, or import the posts alone. Your API key stays with you: FigVote never connects to Canny.
2. Import in FigVote
- Create your project, then open its Settings.
- Under Import from Canny, choose the file and the board the posts go to (or keep Canny's boards apart when the file names them).
- Click Preview: you see how many posts, comments and votes come in, the statuses, the new tags and a few sample rows.
- Click Import.
What comes over, and what does not
- Statuses: Open and Under review become Open; Planned, In progress and Closed stay; Complete becomes Shipped. A custom status comes in as Open, and the preview names it.
- Votes: the score comes in as a count shown as "+N earlier" next to the vote button. No voter accounts are created, so new votes start from there.
- Tags and category: they become tags.
- Dates: each post and comment keeps its original date (when the file has none, or one we can't read, it gets the import date).
- Private boards: the JSON says which Canny boards are private. Their posts go to a private board here, or are left out if you put everything in a public board. The CSV doesn't say: export private boards separately and import them into a private board.
- Comments: from the JSON export only, unsigned. Private and internal comments are left out.
- Not imported: authors, voters and their emails, owners, MRR, ETA, images and merges.
- Limits per file: 3 MB, 2,000 posts, 10,000 comments. Export one board at a time for more.
Canny does not publish the exact column names of its CSV, so FigVote matches the usual ones (for example "Post Title", "Post Detail", "Score (Total Votes)", "Post Status", "Date created", "Tags") and the preview lists the columns it used and the ones it ignored.
